Leverage Your LEGAL ONE Certificate into Graduate Credit
LEGAL ONE certificate holders have graduate education opportunities customized just for them at Rutgers-Newark’s School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA). Up to three graduate credits are available for those who want to leverage the training received in LEGAL ONE into academic credit.
Administrators, teachers and other professionals who hold four certificates of completion for the LEGAL ONE modules can convert them into one graduate credit, which can be earned by completing a short paper on any topic covered by LEGAL ONE, and by paying tuition in an amount reduced by the LEGAL ONE fee.
Rutgers SPAA also offers a special online two-credit education law course for those who’ve successfully completed LEGAL ONE, permitting school leaders to receive a total of three graduate credits. The two-credit course, which can be completed at any time within one year of registration, complements the LEGAL ONE curriculum by focusing on school law topics not covered by LEGAL ONE. These include sources of legal authority for public education, constitutional law, legal structure of public education governance, legal authority of school boards, ethics, school finance, school choice, compulsory attendance, school desegregation, student safety in school and cyberspace, harassment in public schools, Title IX and discrimination based on sex, and school district performance measures. Coursework includes readings, written assignments, and a final paper.
Together, the two-credit online course and one-credit LEGAL ONE curriculum mirror the content of the traditional three-credit education law course that SPAA offers. For the 2010-11 academic year, tuition and fees for the two-credit online course are $1567, and are $950 for the one-credit course, less the LEGAL ONE fee.
Leveraging the LEGAL ONE certificates into three graduate credits at Rutgers-SPAA provides a foundation for further New Jersey Department of Education required education toward leadership positions in K-12 education. SPAA offers a 30-credit hour graduate certificate in Urban Education Administration and Leadership. The three graduate credits available through LEGAL ONE and the online school law course fulfill one requirement of this certificate. In turn, the 30-credit hour certificate fulfills one NJDOE requirement for certification as assistant principal, principal, or superintendent. Other NJDOE requirements are a qualifying master’s degree and successful completion of the Praxis exam.
